Walt Disney is offering a refund on all Baby Einstein DVDS purchased between June 5, 2004 and September 4, 2009, due to persuasion from the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC). They won a Federal Trade Commission complaint against Disney in 2006 and have since been pressuring the company to reimburse parents. Disney's misleading claims that their Baby Einstein DVD's are educational for babies is what brought them under fire.
Research has shown that DVD's are not an effective way to educate babies but may interfere with healthy sleep habits and can be habituating for babies. The American Academy of Pediatrics even recommends no screen time for children under the age of two.
I confess that I'm guilty of letting Bishop watch DVD's and TV. I try to limit it but sometimes allowing him to watch a video is the only way I can take a shower! Now I'll think twice before turning on the TV for Bishop. This is a good reminder that there are better ways to stimulate and educate our children.
